Who We Are & What We Stand For

Unlocking Safety promotes equity and racial justice through science by providing data-driven resources to the community, law enforcement, and elected leaders. This allows us to co-create the tools needed to make informed decisions and take audacious steps toward improved policing.

Unlocking Safety is home to research scientists, community advocates, policy professionals, and former law enforcement leaders who are dedicated to building bridges toward equity, efficiency, and solutions.

Who We Work With

For too long, defining public safety has been assumed to be the responsibility of solely the police. Now, communities across the country are taking steps to comprehensively reexamine public safety and grapple with the systemic injustices that shape it. Unlocking Safety listens to their lived experiences and provides the resources needed to achieve true equity.

Collaborative processes can lead to harm reduction, better support for agency systems, and improved community relations.

What We Do

At Unlocking Safety, we gather and analyze data on behaviors within public safety systems and use that data to help communities achieve safer policing outcomes.

We partner
with Community

We look to communities to define what safety truly means in the places they live, work, and play. Our efforts aim to open the dialogues needed to build maps to equity. Through community-led engagement, we facilitate necessary conversations to identify and name problems, capture potential, and co-create science-backed solutions. Change is happening, and we need to lay out the possibilities.

we Shape
Policy

Dedicated public servants across the country continue to lay the groundwork for substantial policy change that creates pathways to progress nationwide. Unlocking Safety connects elected leaders and other officials to the information, data, and resources needed to lead collective action toward achieving racial justice and equity in public safety.

we Engage
with Law Enforcement

Unlocking Safety is home to former law enforcement leaders and officers dedicated to building bridges. We use our decades of experience in law enforcement agencies to collaborate with agencies interested in science-backed explorations of equity solutions. Sharing our findings is often only the first step in our relationship.

Meghan Cartmill Records Technician, Menomonie Police Dept.

“[Our department] has always maintained that policing is about serving the public and with the drastic social change that the world experienced in 2020, it was clear that MPD needed to explore new perspectives when it came to analyzing data. Through the successful partnership with Unlocking Safety, MPD was able to step beyond merely analyzing the data and begin the discussions on how to make the information relevant to foster positive change. MPD appreciates the dedication of the Unlocking Safety team for helping the department to serve the City of Menomonie through innovation and collaboration.”
